Today at the Las Vegas Comdex Show, CST shows off the first low cost Rambus memory module tester. “While others talks about quarter million dollars RIMM tester, CST is the first one to show a working RIMM tester in the public. This is especially attractive when it is under $20,000” said Cecil Ho, president of CST, Inc.
In the Rambus module manufacturing, the modules have to be tested in 2 passes. One test right after the ball grid soldering to detect assembly errors. The second test is performed after the modules are fully assembled with the proper heat spreader. The new CST “First Pass Tester” is specially built for the assembly error detection. It is built around the widely accepted CST Eureka test engine. A special test adapter generates the packetized signals to turn-on the RIMM module. Each Rambus chip on the module is addressed and memory cells are exercised. Proprietary test patterns are used to pinpoint shorts, opens and assembly errors.
In addition, DC parametric test is performed to ensure proper semiconductor characteristics. The unit also include SPD ( Serial Presence Detect) programmer to test and program the Eeprom on the module.
“ The modules are then tested for functional performance at the second pass. CST is already working on the Apollo Full Function RIMM tester which is targeted to ship Q1, 2000. That will complete the total solution for RIMM testing” said Daniel Tan, CST marketing manager.
Founded in 1983, CST develops, markets, and supports computer memory tester software and hardware. CST pioneered the first low cost SIMM tester for computers in 1985. Since then, CST testers have become the standard for the computer industry, holding more than 70% of the market in memory testers for computer manufacturers and third party memory module manufacturers. With its product lines of SIMM/ DIMM memory tester and handler, CST prides itself for supplying a total memory test solution. CST has a comprehensive line of testers ranging from the low volume service tester to the high-volume production tester.
