Samsung Electronics announced samples of an 8GB memory chip to major mobile electronics manufacturers, something the company claims is the highest density embedded flash memory.
Samsung's moviNAND memory solution consists of four 16Gb NAND flash chips made on a 50nm process node with a MultiMediaCard (MMC) controller and associated firmware. Because Samsung's moviNAND allows NAND flash to be accessed through a standardized MMC interface, manufacturers who use the new memory solution can develop mobile phones more quickly and at less cost than with raw multi-level cell (MLC) NAND components soldered into a handset, claims Samsung.
Samsung also stated that its 8GB moviNAND is 10-20% smaller than other flash-based embedded memory card solutions. Samsung expects the market for moviNAND to reach an accumulated sales volume of US$4 billion by 2010. Mass production of its 8GB moviNAND is scheduled at the end of 2007.
