DRAM maker Inotera Memories, Inc. is planning to spend up to $6 billion to build two more 12-inch fabs in northern Taiwan.
Inotera already has one 12-inch fab, and is outfitting a second. The third fab will come online in 2009, at the earliest. A schedule wasn't available for Fab 4.
Inotera is a joint venture between Taiwan's Nanya Technology Corp. and Germany's Qimonda AG. It's one of the island's most profitable DRAM makers.
Inotera's Fab 1 and Fab 2 should produce about 90,000 wafers per month by mid 2007, a 45 percent increase compared with last year. By the end of this year, the capacity of the two fabs will be expanded to 120,000 wafers per month, the company said.
Inotera's main product is 512-Mb DDR2 DRAM.
