Foundry Hua Hong NEC Electronics Co. said it will increase capacity by 50 percent this year by adding to its 200-mm wafer lines.
The company currently has one fab in full production, and a second fab, Fab 2, recently started operation and will ramp into mass production later this year. Fab 1C is under construction and scheduled to ramp up in 2008.
The company is expected to reach 80,000 wafers per month capacity by the end of this year and eventually 110,000 wafers per month when the third line starts production.
Hua Hong NEC, a foundry venture between Japan's NEC Corp. and the Chinese government controlled Hua Hong Group, used to own one 8-inch fab capable of 0.35- to 0.18-micron technologies. Fab 1 started production in 1999 and has a current capacity of 53,000 wafers per month.
Hua Hong NEC had been planning to build a 300-mm fab, but the plan was shelved because of a lack of funds.
