During a conference for financial analysts this week in Taipei, Chia Song Hwee, president and CEO of Singapore-based wafer foundry Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has been quoted in news reports saying that it is going into production for its customer Advanced Micro Devices Inc. at the 65-nm manufacturing node, and is also working on the 45-nm node.
While the reports say Hwee admits there is no firm agreement with AMD yet for 45-nm, officials at the company would only say, “Chartered is currently working with AMD on moving to production at 65-nm,” but had no further comment.
An AMD spokesperson told press that it is currently in full production with Chartered at 90-nm and is in the midst of a transition to 65-nm.
The companies achieved full production on AMD microprocessors in July 2006 in Chartered’s Fab 7 in Singapore, which uses AMD’s proprietary precision manufacturing technology, the spokesperson reminded.
On its own, AMD has committed to deliver 45-nm microprocessor by mid-2008, with a ramp in the first half of next year. The company is currently working on the process and development aspect of the manufacturing node, which is going well, AMD’s spokesperson noted.
The Intel rival plans to include immersion lithography and ultra low-k dielectic technology in its 45-nm process, and is still considering high-k materials as well, the spokesperson added.
