Acer adds AMD Rev-F CPU to Blade Server

Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Acer plans to add blade servers and AMD Rev F Opteron-based servers to its x86 server line-up this year, possibly allowing the company to widening its lead with China-based server makers Lenovo and Langchao in terms of market share and shipment volumes, according to sources at server makers.

Acer will carefully control the production volume of its AMD Rev F-based servers, which will launch in the second quarter, noted sources at Acer, adding that the company plans to launch its first blade server in the third quarter of this year.

With Lenovo, Langchao and Acer's current server lineup being Intel-based, Acer's addition of a new AMD-based lineup could assist the company in solidifying its current market position, noted sources at server makers.

Acer ranked eighth worldwide in the x86 server market in the fourth quarter of 2006 with shipments of around 14,000 units for a 0.8% market share, while Lenovo ranked ninth with around 13,000 units for a 0.7% market share while Langchao ranked tenth with around 10,000 units for 0.6% market share, according to a report by IDC (International Data Corporation).
