Infineon to put $270 million for R&D expansion

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Infineon plans to spend $270 million to expand its R&D activities in Singapore, focusing on technologies to improve energy efficiency, connectivity and security in a wide range of communication, consumer and automotive applications.

The expansion does not focus on specific technologies, processes or applications, explained an Infineon spokesperson. Instead, the company aims at strengthening its overall R&D capacity, adding 150 new engineering jobs over the next three years to its Singapore staff. The activities of that R&D center, one of 35 major centers Infineon runs worldwide, cover next-generation home networking technologies, Customer Premises Equipment for broadband and xDSL access, ultra-low cost mobile phone platforms, digital video broadcasting for mobile devices, digital power control, microcontrollers for automotive and industrial applications, process technologies for wafer manufacturing and packaging and ASIC design.

Infineon CEO Wolfgang Ziebart announced to intensify the company's global R&D presence over the upcoming years. "We will expand our R&D activities globally as our customers and their applications require more diversity and variety," he said.
