Cypress Semiconductor may withdrew from the pseudo SRAM (PSRAM) market and is in talks with Taiwan IC design houses for the sale of its memory business.
The sources indicated that Cypress has been in talk with Taiwan-based Elite Semiconductor Memory Technology (ESMT) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) affiliate MemoCom about the sale, though no deal has been finalized.
In the past, Cypress was the leading maker in the PSRAM market, with the company counting Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson as its customers, the sources explained. However, with sales of its 16Mb and 32Mb products not meeting expectations, the company is seeing only a limited contribution from the business to its overall sales, and so plans to sell the business, the sources stated.
However, other market sources indicated that under any deal, Cypress would only sell its photomask facility, with the deal being valued at less that US$20 million.
