Samsung predicts strong DRAM demand for 2007

Friday, May 11, 2007

Samsung Electronics reported its positive outlook for the entire memory business, which includes both DRAM and NAND flash.

Samsung stressed that demand for both types of memory are recovering with its own performance to trend more positive amid persistent cost reductions.

Samsung notes demand for commodity DRAM in consumer PCs has increased amid the Windows Vista effect, – 1GB PC systems exceeded 512MB in March. The continual price fall, though it weighed on memory makers' cost, has somewhat highlighted the attractive price of 2GB. Samsung had previously projected that average DRAM content per box would be 1.2GB in the second quarter. The amount is believed to ramp up to 1.5GB during late 2007.

Supply is also trending reasonably as major manufacturers have stopped their transition from NAND flash to DRAM. In order to offset the price pressure from DRAM, Samsung said the ratio of specialty DRAM will grow from the first quarter's 25% to second quarter's 35%.

Already foretelling 80nm will be the mainstream DRAM production technology in the second quarter, Samsung stressed that it is also aggressively migrating to the sub 80nm node in the second quarter, implying a more competitive cost structure is ahead.
