United Microelectronics Corp. open a new R&D center in Southern Taiwan that will focus on 45-nanometer and below process technologies.
The facility is located in Tainan. When fully staffed, the site will hold more than 1,000 people, most of which will consist of R&D engineers, the company said.
"The grand opening, along with the ongoing construction of UMC's second phase of 300mm construction on the same site, underscores UMC's strong commitment to continuing its future growth and investment in Taiwan," said Jackson Hu, UMC's chief executive.
The 10-story R&D center occupies nearly 6,000 square meters of UMC's 155,660 square meter Tainan site.
UMC plans to have several customer tape-outs at the 45-nm technology node during the second half.
