Acer's PC shipments soared by 45.8% inn the first Quarter to reach 4.2 million units, up from 2.9 million the same period a year ago. Acer attained a market share of 6.8%, beating Lenovo by a 0.4 of a percentage point. It was the first time Acer has risen to third place, the company's highest ranking to date.
Acer and Lenovo have expanded their respective market shares considerably over the last year, reflecting the growing strength of the taiwanese PC maker.
Top-ranked PC maker Hewlett-Packard also performed well in the quarter, boosting its sales by 26.5% to 10.7 million units. The No. 5 performer Toshiba's shipments rose 13.8% to 2.6 million units.
Second-place Dell was the only company in the top five to suffer a decline. Shipments fell 6.8% to 9 million units. The drop, however, was less than in the fourth quarter, when shipments from the company dropped 8.6% year over year.
