Kingston Technology's fully-owned testing and packaging house Payton Technology has started production at its window ball grid array (WBGA) lines, currently processing orders chiefly from the parent company and Powertech Technology (PTI), according to PTI chairman DK Tsai.
Tsai, who also heads Kingston Technology Far East, said Payton's current WBGA monthly capacity amounts to 2-3 million units, and it will ramp up to 10 million units by the fourth quarter.
He stressed that the operation of Payton will not undermine Kingston's support for PTI, because Payton, as a PTI sourcing partner, is like a production base for PTI in China.
PTI would not rule out the possibility of taking over Payton in the future when the Taiwan government further relaxes its restrictions on testing and packaging makers' investments in China, Tsai said.
China is offering a big market for the memory testing and packaging industry as top memory makers Samsung Electronics, Hynix Semiconductor, Micron Technology, Qimonda and Elpida Memory, are all gearing up their production there.
