Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd may decide sometime in September whether to purchase equipment from Hynix Semiconductor Inc.
'In order to expand TSMC's eight-inch-wafer capacity, TSMC has been sourcing used equipment globally,' company spokesman JH Tzeng said.
TSMC will not elaborate on any specific arrangements at this point,' he said.
The Economic Daily News reported today that TSMC is expected to decide in the third quarter whether to buy eight-inch-wafer equipment from Hynix to meet demand from OmniVision on 0.18 micron process technology.
TSMC may also acquire an entire eight-inch-wafer plant from Hynix, the daily said, adding that the acquisition price is likely to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
