The construction of a new factory in Beijing has been started ,which is a move of Sony Ericsson deemed to make China its global manufacturing base.
This is according to a report from Xinhua.net, which stated the new factory covers 18,500 square meters and will manufacture mobile handsets and assemble surface mounted circuit boards.
Gunilla Nordstron, head of Sony Ericsson China, said the construction of the facility would contribute to the consolidation of China's status as the company's strategic development base. China is the company's sole strategic development base covering design, manufacturing, sourcing, R&D, as well as global sales and marketing, she said.
The new factory is located between Sony's two other plants¡ªBeijing Se Putian Mobile Communications (BMC), which produces mobile handsets, and Beijing Suohong Electronics, which manufactures PCBs.
A Sony Ericsson China spokesperson revealed that BMC represented roughly one-third of the company's global manufacturing volume with direct shipment to 119 countries and regions, but declined to provide the new plant's production capacity.
