Saifun Semiconductors Ltd. is acquiring IP and 90-nm process technology from Shanghai, China-based semiconductor foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC). Financial details have not been disclosed.
Samples of the first 2-gigabit flash product based on SMIC’s 90-nm process technology have been shipped, with the product expected to reach the market later this year. The flash chip is based on Saifun’s NROM technology, which the company claims is the highest density of data flash in the same technology node.
Subsequently, Saifun will develop an 8-gigabit density product, based on Saifun’s Quad NROM four-bit-per-cell technology, scheduled to reach the market early next year.
The companies said they are committed to continuing to invest in the productization of high-density data flash and plan to develop broader applications that leverage the Quad NROM 4-bit-per-cell technology.
