Taiwan DRAM manufacturers move to 70nm

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Taiwan DRAM makers are well prepared to make their move forward on 70nm production with most already seeing stable yields.

Inotera Memory will start mass production on 70nm in the third quarter, and the company will have 30% of its total 120,000 wafer capacity alloted for 70nm production in the fourth quarter, industry players projected.

ProMOS Technologies is now having 40% of its wafer start at Fab 3 with yields now reaching 80-85%, according to company sources. The company will have half of its wafer start on 70nm in July and all wafers will be fabricated on 70nm during October, the sources revealed.

Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), though previously said to have been caught in a 70nm production issue before, should have about 70-80% of its total 90,000 wafer capacity at Fab 12A and Fab 12B to be assigned to 70nm in the second half of 2007. Company sources noted that yields from 70nm production has been improved considerably and the company is speeding up to shift the production of 1Gb DDR2 chips to the 70nm node, which would make it one of the first Taiwan DRAM maker to mass produce 1Gb DDR2 on this node.
