LM Ericsson and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. have renewed their worldwide patent cross -licensing deal, ending recent lawsuits between the two companies.
Under the terms of the deal, Ericsson has granted Samsung a non-exclusive license on its patent portfolio for 2G and 3G subscriber and infrastructure equipment. In return, the Swedish group gains access to Samsung's portfolio in the same sectors.
The firms will pay royalties to each other.
The companies originally signed a licensing deal in 2002 for patents related to several mobile phone technologies. That agreement expired in 2005, and it allowed Samsung to use patents from Ericsson for GSM, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) technologies.
But in February 2006, Ericsson sued Samsung in Germany, the Netherlands and the U.K. for alleged breach of the arrangement after the companies could not agree terms to extend the cross licensing deal, while the South Korean company filed a counter-suit.
In August 2006, Ericsson filed a fresh lawsuit against Samsung in a court in Texas, charging Samsung with infringing some of the patents involved.
