TSMC(Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ) expressed their confidence in sales contribution from the production of CPUs in 2008.
Regarding TSMC's deployment in the CPU area, Tsai noted that TSMC is more in the investment stage at the moment with customer engagement underway. Concrete results should be seen in the second half of 2008 with corresponding sales contribution expected, he said.
TSMC will start out its CPU production on a 45nm high-end process with low-cost PCs being the initial targeted market, Tsai said, declining to elaborate in more detail.
Tsai noted that CPU production is capital-intensive and the required technologies are more demanding than what TSMC has been used to dealing with. TSMC has to allocate more resources in high k, metal gate-related technologies in order to ensure high performance and low leakage in CPUs, he added.
