Nokia, the world's top cellphone maker, said it would outsource the last of its chip business to STMicroelectronics to free up resources for other areas, lifting shares in both companies.
The Finnish company, which will continue to develop its own modems, said that STMicro would design and build third-generation chips based on Nokia technologies for Nokia and other customers.
The decision, part of a trend by makers of handsets and consumer electronics to concentrate on their core competencies, will increase Nokia's dependency on chipset suppliers but allow it to focus on growth area
