The tight supply of IT parts and components has begun to affect shipments of branded notebook PCs for the second half of the year with Dell apparently the first vendor to experience the supply squeeze as it begins to gear up channel sales, according to sources at Taiwan PC makers.
Dell failed to deliver about 500-600 units of its newly launched color Inspiron notebooks to Taiwan-based retailer Tsann Kuen early this month as originally scheduled, the sources noted.
Tsann Kuen said that it has received notice from Dell saying that a shortage of parts and components caused the shipment delay. However, Dell did not specify when the delivery would be fulfilled, according to Tsann Kuen, the largest retail channel in Taiwan.
Dell is outsourcing the production of its Inspiron notebooks to Quanta Computer, which shipped 2.8 million notebooks in July, according to a Digitimes report.
The current supply crunch of parts and components has not only affected Dell but also other vendors such as Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Acer, pushing HP's 12.1-inch models and Acer's new Inspire-series consumer notebooks into tight supply, the sources stated.
The parts and components currently facing shortages include LCD panels, high-end hard disks, battery modules and printed circuit boards, indicated the sources.
Dell's regional headquarters in Singapore declined to comment whether the supply of parts and components has affected the company's shipments.
