Sony selects Singapore for new battery plant

Thursday, August 16, 2007 Sony Corp. said this week (Aug. 14) it will invest $97 million in a new lithium-ion polymer battery plant here, the company's first such venture in Southeast Asia.

Sony said in a statement that the facility, which is due to begin operations in August 2008, will employ about 500 people and produce up to 8 million lithium-ion polymer batteries a month.

The plant's output will help Sony meet rising demand for high-capacity batteries for mobile phones. That demand has fueled double-digit growth in the lithium- ion battery market.

Sony plans to contribute to the development of the local electronics industry through "value-added manufacturing, technology transfer and the development of local engineers," said Yutaka Nakagawa, executive deputy president and officer in charge of Sony's Semiconductor and Component Group.
