Hynix to boost Nand Flash supply

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

The tight NAND flash supply may be easing, as evident in Samsung Electronics' recent softening attitude over quotations and the ramping up of supply from Hynix Semiconductor, according to sources at memory module makers in Taiwan.

Samsung, which recently was quoting its NAND flash contract price higher than average, is said to have lowered its final quotes to a majority of its customers, the sources said. The Korean chipmaker is only insisting to quote prices in accordance with its contract price quotations for customers who have limited orders, they added.

While Samsung seems more open to price bargaining, Samsung rival Hynix is increasing its supply to the market, the sources noted. Yet, the sources did not reveal further details regarding the increased volume.

After seeing NAND flash prices appreciate critically in August, the recent price negotiation and supply status prompted marketers to request for contract price reductions in September with NAND flash spot prices especially trending downward, the sources noted.

According to figures posted by DRAMeXchange, the spot price of the mainstream 8Gb MLC NAND flash chip has kept trending downward from mid-August. Samsung quoted its 8Gb MLC NAND (part number: G8G) at US$8.00 on September 3, down from the latest peak of US$9.30 on August 9. Average quotes on September 3 was US$7.86.
