VIA Technologies has announced August revenues of NT$1.28 billion (US$38.75 million), a drop of 5.33% on month and 15% on year. With declining performance in its chipset business plus its embedded platform processor shipments are not showing any obvious growth, the company's accumulated revenues for the first eight months were only NT$11.03 billion, a drop of 31.14% on year, according to sources at VIA.
With the ongoing price war from the big companies such as Intel, AMD and Nvidia, it is becoming more difficult for third-party chipset makers to compete. Additionally, the UMPC market has still not taken off, and therefore it is unlikely VIA will see any increase in its profits in 2007, noted the sources.
Currently, the company is focusing on various embedded products including IPC (industrial PC), UMPC, STB (set-top box) and panel PCs. The company has already received some orders for its embedded products and is expected to see profits in 2008, if the big companies do not enter the market, noted sources at embedded product vendors.
