Panasonic claims first to ship 45nm product


Thursday, October 4, 2007 Matsushita Electrical Industries Ltd. is using a commercial 45-nm chip in the Diga-brand Blu-ray optical disc recorders it will start shipping in November under the Panasonic label.

Matsushita (Osaka, Japan) says the latest version of its UniPhier chips will be the first made in a 45-nm process technology to reach the mass volume consumer market. Intel is also planning to ship processors made on a 45-nm process during November.

Panasonic revealed Tuesday (Oct 2) it is launching the optical disc recorder, initially only in Japan.

Matsushita developed the 45-nm process in its own fab in conjunction with Renesas Technology. The process uses 193-nm immersion lithography, stress-induced mobility-enhanced transistors, low-k dielectrics and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) technologies.

Short for UNIversal Platform for High Quality Image Enhancing Revolution, the digital consumer electronics integration platform uses the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec.

The company says using the device, it had managed to quadruple the recordable time for the same media compared with MPEG-2, a representative conventional codec for moving pictures, since the image compression can be performed at twice or three times the usual efficiency.

The UniPhier LSI integrates 250 million transistors on chip yet is said to be very power efficient.

The part uses multi decoding technology, which is capable of simultaneously processing two large screens of high picture quality and full-HD, and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoding technology, which compresses a full-HD image into 1/2 to 1/3 its original size compared with the conventional technology.

Panasonic sees the UniPhier architecture as the basis in the future for a whole range of products, from media-oriented mobile phones to in-car entertainment systems.
