Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, is set to cut 200 jobs, or about 4 percent of the staff, at its Leixlip wafer fabs in Ireland, according to an Irish Independent report.
Intel employs about 5,000 people at a series of wafer fabs in Leixlip. The jobs are mainly involved in flash memory production and will go by the end of the year under a voluntary redundancy program, the report said.
"Intel has remained competitive in Ireland to date, despite increasing cost pressures, due to the ingenuity and commitment of our talented employees," the article quoted Jim O'Hara, general manager Intel Ireland, as saying and that he said Irish operations remained a "critical asset" for Intel.
Workers are being encouraged to step forward and take redundancy by a package of measures that includes six weeks' pay for each year of service plus statutory benefits, the report said.
