Apple Inc. roared past analysts profit and revenue estimates in its fiscal 2007 fourth quarter as strong sales across all product lines, including computers, digital music players and wireless handsets propelled the company to record results.
The company's Macintosh computer shipments soared to a record 2.16 million units for the quarter, a 34 percent increase from the year-ago comparable quarter, while ipod sales rose to more than 10 million units.
Apple said it shipped 1.12 million iPhones during the quarter, bringing the total sold since the wireless handsets were introduced to 1.39 million units.
Furthermore, Apple is predicting strong revenue growth in the ongoing quarter with its executives saying they expect to wrap up the calendar year with strong holiday sales.
"We're looking forward to a strong December quarter as we enter the holiday season with Apple's best products ever," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, in a statement.
Apple closed the fiscal fourth quarter ended September 29 with net income of $904 million, or $1.01 per share, 17 percents above the consensus analysts' estimate of 86 cents a share and 67 percent above the $542 million, or 62 cents a share the company reported in the fiscal 2006 comparable quarter.
Revenue in the recently ended quarter rose to $6.2 billion, up 28.5 percent, from $4.8 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006. The company ended fiscal 2007 with revenue of $24 billion, an increase of 24 percent from fiscal 2006.
Fiscal 2007 net income rose to $3.5 billion, or $3.93 per share, from $1.99 billion, or $2.27 per share, in fiscal 2006.
"Apple ended the fiscal year with $15.4 billion in cash and no debt," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Looking ahead to the first quarter of fiscal 2008, we expect revenue of about $9.2 billion and earnings per diluted share of about $1.42."
