Applied Material named new CTO

Friday, October 26, 2007

Former Texas Instruments CTO and senior VP of silicon technology development, Dr. Hans Stork, has been named by Santa Clara, Calif.-based semiconductor manufacturing equipment giant Applied Materials Inc. as CTO and group VP of its silicon systems group (SSG), effective today.

Stork is a recognized leader in the semiconductor industry and will lead the roadmap for Applied’s silicon technology equipment, oversee integrated technology development across the silicon products, and coordinate SSG’s industry and university engagements.

In collaboration with the business units that comprise SSG, his organization will focus on increasing the value to Applied’s customers by leveraging its understanding of technology interactions to optimize differentiated product solutions, the company said.

Stork adds 25 years of experience in the industry to his position at Applied, including service in several technology advisory positions: He was named an IEEE Fellow in 1994 and has served on the Semiconductor Research Corp. board of directors since 1999 and the International Sematech Board since 2002.

He earned a doctorate degree from Stanford University, after which time he joined IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center in 1982 and led efforts on advanced silicon germanium bipolar technology R&D and its transition into manufacturing.

Prior to TI, Stork was director of the internet systems and storage lab at Hewlett-Packard in California.

Tom St. Dennis, senior VP and general manager of Applied’s SSG said in a statement, “I am delighted to welcome Hans to the leadership team of the silicon systems group. His industry experience, strong customer perspective and technical leadership should prove to be a wonderful resource for Applied Materials’ customers.”

With Hans joining SSG, Applied’s Mark Pinto, senior VP, corporate CTO and general manager of the energy and environmental solutions group noted that the company is reinforcing its commitment to meeting the technology needs of customers and advancing the semiconductor technology roadmap.

Pinto will continue his role as corporate CTO, focused primarily on cross-company strategies and pursuing new technology and business opportunities.
