Micron today announced what the company claims is the industry's first 2-Gbit double data rate (DDR) 3 component, which, the company said, is now the highest density DDR3 component available on the market.
Using 2-Gbit components, Micron can enable 8-GByte and 16-GByte modules for servers and 4-GByte modules for desktop and notebook PCs. Micron said it is now sampling modules based on its 2-Gbit DDR3 component for server, desktop and notebook applications. Commercial availability for the product is planned for Q1 2008.
Micron said its 78-nm 2-Gbit DDR3 memory technology provides increased speeds of up to 1333-Mbits per second (Mbps) and reduces supply voltage from 1.8V to 1.5V in comparison to DDR2 technology.
"Just as we led the market last year with the introduction of our 1-Gbit DDR3 component, we are leading the market yet again with our new 2-Gbit component," Brian Shirley, VP of Micron's memory group, said in a statement.
