A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook the Santa Clara Valley in Northern California on Tuesday (Oct. 30) evening.
The earthquake hit at about 8:04 p.m. PST, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). No major damage or injuries have been reported thus far.
Buildings rattled and shook for a number of minutes in the San Jose area during the quake. Cellular-phone and telephone services failed in parts of the region. Most calls in San Jose failed as of 8:50 p.m. PST.
The quake's epicenter hit at a depth of 5.7 miles about 9 miles from downtown San Jose. It was felt around the region, including in Manteca, a city in the central valley of California, according to reports. Manteca is about 80 miles east of San Francisco.
