Qimonda AG, has shipped what it says are the indutry's first 512Mb GDDR5 (Graphics Double Data Rate 5) samples to customers.
GDDR5 is widely expected to become the next predominant graphics DRAM standard and will boost memory bandwidth of graphics applications. The specification is about to get finalized in JEDEC.
GDDR5 will be available with data rates up to 20GBytes/ s per component, more than double the bandwidth of the fastest GDDR3 memories today and incorporates power saving features.
Quimonda says first products using its GDDR5 memories should be on sale early next year. Initial applications will include high specification graphics cards for both desktops and notebooks, followed by gaming consoles.
