NEC financial improved but still at a loss

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 NEC Corp.'s fiscal second half net loss narrowed sharply as the company gained benefits from ongoing reorganization and cost-cutting actions in its mobile computing, semiconductor and electronic components business.

The company's revenue fell, however, as NEC continued to face pressures in several areas of its operations. Net loss at the Japanese company for the six months ended September 30 shrank to $41 million from $86 million, in the year-ago comparable period.

NEC's revenue fell 3.6 percent, to $18.6 billion from $19.3 billion. The company attributed the lower sales to the sale of its personal computer "business in Europe in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year and the transfer of the sales operation of optical disc drives."

The company said sales at its NEC Electronics Corp. division strengthened 2 percent to $3.1 billion during the first half of the fiscal year.

NEC said it plans to intensify efforts at returning the group to profitability by accelerating the development of mobile handsets and improving its supply chain.

Some of those efforts would be concentrated in the reorganization of NEC Electronics' manufacturing activities in Japan and overseas, the company said.
