PARIS " Sony France SA announced its decision to sell its manufacturing site in Pontonx-sur-L'Adour, in the French region of Aquitaine, and to cut 230 jobs, on a total of 791 jobs, at its mobile phone plant in Ribeauvill, in the French region of Alsace, confirmed the company's spokesperson to press in Europe.
Opened in 1984, Sony's site in Pontonx-sur-L'Adour employs 331 people and is specialized in magnetic tapes production. It has refocused its activities in the restoration and digitalization of video archives as well as photovoltaic roof tile production.
"We are now in discussions to sell our plant in Pontonx-sur-L'Adour," stated Sony's spokesperson, specifying that no transaction date can be given at this point.
This statement contredicts previous reports that Sony would close its manufacturing site in Pontonx-sur-L'Adour.
Opened in 1986, Sony's site in Ribeauvill offers engineering, production, after-sales services and co-production activities. It produces car radios and CD-players, household appliances, professional applications, PDA mobile phones, VAIO laptops, entertainment robots (Aibo), handycams and digital cameras satellite decoders.
The company's site in Ribeauvill employed up to 1.600 people at the end of the 1990s and went through several restructuring plans.
On its website, Sony Alsace reports a turnover of 793 million, with facilities of 38 000 m2 of factory space on a site of 285 000 m2.
