AMD unveils highend graphic chip for notebook

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

AMD announced the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series, a new family of discrete graphics processors for high end notebook, at CES Las Vegas.

The series is aimed at meeting the needs of the most demanding mobile users at work and play, with the first products in the family consisting of the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 and 3600 series, with the series as a whole optimized for the forthcoming AMD notebook platform, code-named Puma.

The company remarked that the series is meant to provide the latest industry-standard technology for notebooks with Microsoft DirectX 10.1 and PCI Express 2.0 support, as well as integrated DisplayPort connectivity, in order to give notebook manufacturers the ability to create products with new features.

Further, AMD believes the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series propels HD gaming to the next level with life-like realism thanks to Microsoft DirectX 10.1 capabilities. The support for DirectX 10.1 allows a higher level of visual quality through new lighting and rendering techniques designed to enhance the realism and quality of 3D games, whereas PCI Express 2.0 support is meant to allow faster throughput and greater overall system performance as compared to PCI Express 1.1, the company explained.

The chips also allow notebook users to play the Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies in full-HD 1080p resolution (HD display required) using ATI Avivo HD Technology which frees the CPU for other tasks.

With a choice of digital outputs, notebook users will be able to connect to a variety of displays featuring DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort support on a notebook platform as these notebook graphics chips were designed to provide battery efficiency and superb performance-per-watt.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3600 series are currently shipping in notebooks from ASUS. Additional products in the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series are scheduled for availability from notebook manufacturers in the first half of 2008.
