Promos to shutdown fab longer for the Holidays

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 ProMOS Technologies has scheduled an exceptionally long annual maintenance period of 10 days for its 12-inch fabs at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP), during which production will completely stop.

DRAM makers in Taiwan usually conduct their annual maintenance during the lunar New Year holidays, but the length has usually been three to four days only, industry sources pointed out.

But ProMOS has confirmed that this year the CTSP 12-inch fabs will have long maintenance during the Chinese New Year holidays in February. The company said it is extending the maintenance work because prices for the fabs' chief output, 512Mb DDR2, are weak, and it also needs to make preparations for some new projects.

ProMOS maintained that the maintenance work will not affect its clients, as the company has already made sufficient arrangements to meet clients' orders and demand.

But ProMOS' production at its fabs at the Hsinchu Science Park will not see such extended maintenance, as the fabs' special DRAM and DDR offer high margins and profits, the sources said.
