Qimonda hast started to ship first samples of its XDR memory chips.
Qimonda plans to enter the volume production phase by end of Q2,2008, the company said. The chips sport a memory capacity of 512 Mbit; for higher densities presently there is no market, a company spokesperson said.
The XDR technology, developed by IP vendor Rambus, targets bandwidth-intensive and high-throughput-applications for computing and consumer electronics such as game consoles and High-definition TV sets.
According to the experts, 44 million video consoles and 113 million digital TV sets will be produced in 2008.
