ProMOS Technologies is not in a hurry to finalize its partnership on 66nm process with Hynix, according to company president, ML Chen. Chen pointed out that the company's current self-developed 70nm-based 1GB DDR2 memory costs around 20% less than similar specification chips from other makers.
Although Hynix's current process node is mainly 66nm, the company will advance into 54nm in the later half of 2008. If ProMOS signs a contract now over 66nm processing, then the company will be quickly left behind again when Hynix starts mass production at 54nm, noted sources at memory module makers.
With the 70nm 1GB DDR2 memory products produced by ProMOS ranking much better than average, the company should be able to ride through a technology lull, while it seeks a source for 50nm processing, added the sources.
Chen admitted that ProMOS is currently in contact with several DRAM makers including Micron and Elpida, and expects to have a conclusion before the end of the first half.
