Advantest the world's largest maker of microchip testers, is considering an alliance or acquisition to supply probe cards as it seeks a new business model.
Advantest, whose shares have dipped to 4-1/2-year lows since it halved its earnings outlook in January, also intends to keep its 50-yen dividend said President Toshio Maruyama..Entering the probe business would help secure stable revenue in the ups and downs of the silicon cycle, he said.
"We want to have probe card technology, whether through an alliance or M&A," Maruyama said.
"We should seriously consider the possibility of M&A," he said. "If we don't do something, we could become an M&A target."
Advantest shares closed down 2.3 percent at 2,100 yen, while Tokyo's electrical machinery subindex IELEC.ended the day down 1.6 percent.
