Numonyx BV is planning to move its DRAM production from existing suppliers to Hynix Semiconductor and ProMOS Technologies.
Ed Doller, chief technology officer of Numonyx, said that it was vital that any supplier of flash memory into the embedded market has the ability to add random access memory of various types, either through a foundry maker of memory or a relationship with a major DRAM company.
Over time there has been steadily growing tension between the DRAM and flash memory makers as to which company gets to be the prime contractor to the handset makers, often resolved when a major IDM can manufacture both types of memory.
Doller added that Numonyx is well-placed with a joint-venture with Hynix in Wuxi, China, that is making both DRAM and NAND flash memory. When asked why Hynix would want to encourage competition by enabling Numonyx to make flash-RAM memory stacks, Doller said: "There is the ability for us to get RAM on a cost-plus basis."
Doller said that Numonyx also has its own DRAM designs inherited from parent company STMicroelectronics. "ST designed low-density pseudo-static RAMs and synchronous DRAMs. We will manufacture them at ProMOS."
