Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), which runs a packaging and testing operation and an 8-inch fab in Chengdu said its operations are not being affected by an earthquake that took place in China's Sichuan province on May 12.
The magnitude-7.8 earthquake took place at Wenchuan County, southwest of Sichuan province, in the afternoon of May 12. SMIC, which has a packaging and testing joint venture (dubbed AT2) with United Test and Assembly Center (UTAC), in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, said its operations is not being affected.
SMIC indicated that AT2 suspended operations automatically after the earthquake. As frequent aftershocks are recorded, SMIC said its first priority is to guarantee that the supply of electricity is okay. It also noted that Chengdu's electricity supply is normal.
In addition to AT2, SMIC also runs Chengdu Cension Semiconductor Manufacturing for the provincial government. According to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report, SMIC said operations at Cension is also not being affected as the location is 300 miles away from the epicenter of the quake. This 8-inch fab mainly produces specialty DRAM, power management IC (PWM IC), driver IC and CMOS image sensors, the paper wrote.
