Worldwide chip sales up 4% in April

Friday, May 30, 2008 The three-month moving average of worldwide chip sales was $21.2 billion in April, about the same ($21.15 billion) as in March, according to Bruce Diesen, analyst with Carnegie Research. The unadjusted chip sales for April should be up 4 percent year-on-year, slower than the 7.3 percent jump recorded in March, Diesen said.

Diesen said technology exports from China and PC production improved in April, despite a shortage of batteries for notebook computers. At the same time handset sales slowed, world car sales were sluggish for the second consecutive month and chips for Nintendo Wii are expected to have dropped after a very strong March.

Diesen has trimmed the 2008 chip sales forecast to 3 percent growth in dollar value and 11 percent growth in volume. The value growth is lower than the 4.7 percent predicted by World Semiconductor Trade Statistics.
