Atmel offers Controller with FPGA interface

Thursday, June 19, 2008
Atmel announced the CAP7E, the industry's first MCU with a direct FPGA interface featureing a six-layer advanced high-speed bus , peripheral DMA controller and 160 Kbytes of on-chip SRAM.

On chip peripherals include USB 2.0 full speed device, SPI master and slave, two USARTs, three 16-bit timer counters, an 8-channel/ 10-bit analog to digital converter, plus interrupt control and supevisory functions noted above.

Atmel provides special FPGA logic that decodes and encodes the traffic that flows between the FPGA and the CAP7E microcontroller.

The device can be programmed using existing 3rd-party tools. The same C compilers, RTOS, OSs, ICEs and IDEs used with Atmel's AT91SAM ARM-based MCUs can be used with the CAPyE. These include Atmel's free GNU gcc C compiler, GNU gdb debugger, FreeRTOS.org real-time kernel, as well as a host of commercially available tools.

Atmel's AT91CAP7E is available now and is priced as low as $6.95 in quantities of 10,000 units.
