Taiwan LCD panel makers are afraid that a shortage of Intel Atom processors may affect their July shipments of 7- to 10-inch panels targeted to the low-cost notebook and MID (mobile Internet device) applications.
Panel makers are betting on low-cost notebooks to drive their medium-size shipments in the second half of the year, as demand from the digital photo frame market has been weak.
Asustek Computer president Jerry Shen last month said the battery shortage would ease in July, but the shortages of the Atom processors could persist through September.
AU Optronics (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) are the chief suppliers for 8.9-inch panels, while Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) and HannStar Display ship mostly to the 10-inch segment, the sources said.
