The Indian Ministry of Human Resources Development plans to develop a very-low-cost access, low-power device for as little as $10.
The ministry said it wants to continue pushing the limits of computer technology to develop laptops and the devices would be distributed to students as a way of improving education here, said D. Purandeswari, federal minister of state for human resources development for higher education.
The ministry declined to provide technical details or the expected pricetag for the low-cost access device or when it expects to make the $10 laptop available to students. Officials have said intellectual property issues prevented them from disclosing details.
Research to develop the devices is already underway at the Indian Institute of Science, based here, and the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, Purandeswari said.
