NTT Docomo to bundle Eee Netbook

Friday, September 19, 2008

With the company planning to cooperate with Japan-based telecommunications vendor NTT Docomo to bundle its Eee PCs this month, Asustek Computer is expecting to use its netbook to challenge the top-five notebook vendors in Japan in 2009, according to Asustek Japan.

Currently, the company's Eee PC product line accounts for around 85% of the company's total sales in Japan. Asustek is planning to expand shipment volumes and adjust the ratio to 70% Eee PCs and 30% mainstream notebooks in the fourth quarter this year, noted the sources.

In the related news, Asustek Computer sold 85,000 Eee PCs in Japan in the first half of this year. In July the company shipped 45,000 units and in August 58,000, bringing total shipments to 188,000 units for the first eight months in 2008, according to a Japanese-language Business Computer News (BCN) report.

The company's 8.9-inch Eee PC901-X and 7-inch Eee PC 4G-X took the first and second spots in the market for PCs priced below 100,000 Yen (US$946.52), and the two models' combined sales accounted for 70.5% of all the PCs that were listed, noted the report.

Acer's Aspire one accounted for 9% of sales to take the number three spot, while Micro-Star International's U100 accounted for 8% and took fourth place. Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) Mini-Note was ranked number six.
