Google Inc. said Tuesday (Oct. 7) it has added two new teams and a new partner to its Lunar X Prize competition, a robotic race to the Moon.
Google is offering $30 million to international competitors in a race to see which can safely land a robot on the lunar surface. The two new teams bring the number of competitors for the Lunar X Prize to 14.
The two new teams are Independence-X Aerospace from Malaysia and Omega Envoy, which was formed by students at the University of Central Florida.
To collect a $20 million "grand prize," the successful team must soft land a privately-funded robotic spacecraft on the Moon by Dec. 31, 2012. The robot must be capable of roving 500 meters and transmitting specific video, images and data back to Earth.
Google also said that Analytical Graphics Inc. (Exton, Pa.) will provide analysis software for the competition.
