Samsung enters US notebook market with 5 new products

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Samsung Electronics has made its entrance into the United States notebook PC market.

Samsung comes into the market with five notebooks and one netbook that it believes will allow it access to the business and consumer segments. Each notebook will use Intel Centrino 2 processor technology with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 3 GBytes of system RAM, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth 2.0, and HDMI output. The company reminded that more than 80% of the core components that go into its notebooks are Samsung-branded.

The South Korea-based electronics giant leads its home PC market and, until today, only had presence in 12 additional markets: the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Netherlands, Russia, Ukraine, China, Hong Kong, and Turkey.

“With Samsung’s entry into the U.S. notebook market, we are now able to provide a complete PC computing solution to our customers,” said Christopher Franey, VP of marketing and commercial sales at Samsung Electronics' information technology division, in a statement today. “The introduction of Samsung’s premium notebook offerings to the US market solidifies Samsung as a global technology leader, providing advanced mobile computing designs of the highest reliability and quality.”

Samsung's new notebooks (models X360, X460, Q310, R610, and P460) range from $1,049 to $1,599, while its netbook (NC10) is slated at a MSRP of $499, $200 more than Asustek's popular Eee PC netbook. The netbook comes with a 10.2-inch-wide LCD screen, while the notebook LCD screens range from 13.3 inches to 16 inches wide.
