IBM opened R&D center in Shanghai

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

IBM announced the opening of a Shanghai R&D facility, its first new research facility in almost 10 years.

The new facility is an extension of the IBM China Research Laboratory, one of IBM’s eight research labs worldwide that was established in Beijing in 1995. Since then, IBM has opened two other research facilities, both in India.

“The very nature of research is changing. It is more open, more global and more collaborative,” said Dr John E Kelly III, IBM senior VP and director of IBM Research, in a statement. “The establishment of IBM Research in Shanghai reflects both the rich pool of science and engineering talent in China as well as our continued commitment to expand our collaboration with Chinese enterprises and academic institutions.”

IBM reported that the Shanghai facility will focus primarily on information analytics, Web delivered service computing, cloud computing, and stream computing.

The lab also will focus on integrating service science, management, and engineering (SSME) into the Chinese university curriculum. SSME is an academic discipline designed by IBM to develop skills for what the company describes as a "services-based global economy," and brings together computer science, operations research, industrial engineering, business strategy, management sciences, social and cognitive sciences, and legal sciences.

“Our extension in Shanghai adds to the significant research and development presence in China and increases China’s position as an innovation hub for IBM,” said Dr Thomas Li, director of IBM’s China Research Laboratory, in the statement. “IBM’s China Research Lab helps clients innovate, helps to cultivate local talent and is an integral part of the IBM Research network that brings technological innovation to clients globally.”

IBM did not state the cost of the Shanghai facility, nor its staffing plans. The company's Beijing facility employs approximately 150 people. IBM Research's US locations employ approximately 2,400 people.
