Samsung to produce PRAM Chip next year

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 Samsung Electronics will begin mass production of 65 nano 512MB PRAM in the first half of the next year.

PRAM, known as perfect RAM, is the next generation memory chip which features the advantages of NAND and NOR flash memories.

Samsung Electronics said on November 10 that it will release samples of 65 nano 512MB PRAM chips and begin the mass production in its 200mm manufacturing line within this year or at least the first half of the next year. A senior official in the company said, gWe obtained tens of thousand PRAM samples in the 90 nano processing line. In the end of this year, we will release out pilot products. Next year, we will begin the mass production to allow clients to use and check the performances.h @

PRAM features advantages of NAND and NOR flash memories as well as DRAMs. Also, it is emerging as an alternative to the limited width of memories. A senior official of Samsung Electronics said, gIn DRAMs, 30 nano, and in NAND flash memories, 20 nano were the limit. There has been no case in DRAM and NAND memories that supports less than 10 nano as in PRAMS.h

Jeong Byung-gi, Ph.D. of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, said, gMany semiconductor device makers tried to develop PRAMs. But, there has not been much progress. Samsungfs mass production will open a new era for new semiconductors.h
