Global bluetooth sales keep rising

Monday, December 15, 2008 The worldwide Bluetooth semiconductor revenue market is expected to be about $1.9 billion in 2008 and about $2.2 billion in 2009, according to IDC.

The revenue is expected to grow from $1.7 billion in 2007 to $3.3 billion by 2012, representing a compound annual growth rate of 14.5 percent.

Bluetooth will continue to be identified with mobile phones and mobile headsets, but will find a growing footprint in other applications such as PC and PC peripherals, car audio kits, personal navigation devices, and fitness and medical devices.

"Mobile handset growth is expected to slow with the economic downturn, but the Bluetooth semiconductor attach rate with mobile phones will continue to climb over the next five years," said Ajit Deosthali, research manager for short range wireless semiconductors at IDC, in a statement.

The Bluetooth attach rate for mobile handsets will climb beyond 70 percent by 2012, said IDC. Bluetooth is set to be integrated with other radio technologies, such as WLAN and FM radio, IDC said.
