HP has finalized its outsourced production schedule for 2009, with 17-18 million 16:9 aspect ratio notebooks ordered from Taiwan notebook makers.
The orders cover a series of medium- to large-size models, with the 15.6-inch segment accounting for more than 45%, indicated the sources.
HP has set a shipment goal of 37-38 million notebooks for 2009, the sources said. The 15.6-inch product line will likely contribute 22-24% to the forecast, the sources added.
Quanta Computer has secured the majority of production for consumer notebooks, whereas orders for 15.6-inch 16:9 aspect ratio business models are distributed among Compal Electronics and Inventec, according to the sources. Compal has become one of HP's major notebook suppliers for the coming year, the sources commented.
In addition, Quanta will likely cover most of HP's 15.6-inch Voodoo series models which feature LED backlight units (BLUs) from the third quarter of next year, whereas Wistron will manufacture only a few 15.4-inch models using cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs), the sources noted.
HP shipped 21.65 million notebooks during the first three quarters of 2008. Of the shipments, business notebooks contributed about 9.3 million units, whereas 12 million units were consumer models.
